often used in connec\u00adtion with the optimiza\u00adtion of mainten\u00adance plans. This article explains what is behind this and how to imple\u00adment preven\u00adtive mainten\u00adance based on histo\u00adrical failure data.<\/p>\n<p>A very well-known and old example of preven\u00adtive mainten\u00adance is the V-belt in a car, which trans\u00admits the rotation of the engine cranks\u00adhaft to various auxiliary units. It is parti\u00adcu\u00adlarly important to supply the alter\u00adnator, which provides power to many of the car\u2019s electrical compon\u00adents, as well as the hydraulic pump, water pump, power steering, venti\u00adla\u00adtion and air condi\u00adtio\u00adning.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cb13834 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cb13834\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Back to preven\u00adtive mainten\u00adance: Experi\u00adence has shown that a V-belt lasts an average of around 100,000 kilome\u00adters. However, the running time depends on various factors, such as the power of the engine, the age of the V-belt and the number of start\/stop opera\u00adtions. Without knowing these influences precisely, a safety factor is applied to the average service life of the V-belt. The safety factor must also take into account that a broken V-belt can lead to signi\u00adfi\u00adcant engine damage. For example, we set the safety factor to \u03b3=0.8 and replace the V-belt appro\u00adxi\u00adm\u00adately every \u03b3\u22c5100,000=80,000 kilome\u00adters, using the inspec\u00adtion dates recom\u00admended by the manufac\u00adturer. Of course, indivi\u00addual V-belts can also last 120,000 or 150,000 kilome\u00adters, but proac\u00adtive repla\u00adce\u00adment or preven\u00adtive mainten\u00adance minimizes the risk of engine damage without comple\u00adtely elimi\u00adna\u00adting it. When deter\u00admi\u00adning the safety factor, the poten\u00adtial engine damage must be taken into account on the one hand; on the other hand, the effort or workshop costs for repla\u00adcing the V-belt.<\/p>\n<p>This example can be applied to all mecha\u00adnical (and electronic) devices. Typically, the expected load cycles of ball bearings, the average burning time of light bulbs or the service life of sealing rings are known. These compon\u00adents are used in trains, airplanes, genera\u00adtors, robots, eleva\u00adtors, power plants, bicycles, etc. in every country in the world. These many millions of compon\u00adents make effec\u00adtive preven\u00adtive mainten\u00adance important in order to avoid damage and system failures.<\/p>\n<p>So how does preven\u00adtive mainten\u00adance work? The example of the V-belt has already shown this quite well: you need histo\u00adrical failure data for the system type under conside\u00adra\u00adtion or, as in the example of the V-belt, histo\u00adrical failure data for the compo\u00adnent under conside\u00adra\u00adtion. If you want to carry out the calcu\u00adla\u00adtion for a new type of system, you can aggre\u00adgate findings from the installed compon\u00adents or test the system in various practical tests in the labora\u00adtory.<\/p>\n<p>As with V-belts, in practice there are several time dimen\u00adsions that describe the failure inter\u00advals of the system. Let\u2019s take the example of a car that is rarely driven. In this case, the V-belt will eventually become porous and may only last 50,000 kilome\u00adters or less. In another example, the car is moved several times a day (e.g. in a postal delivery vehicle), which can also cause the V-belt to break after 50,000 kilome\u00adters. A distinc\u00adtion is made between the Mean Time Between Removal (MTBR), the Mean Duration Between Removal (MDBR) and the Mean Cycles Between Removal (MCBR). Depen\u00adding on the appli\u00adca\u00adtion, further time dimen\u00adsions are conceivable. A specific failure interval results as a linear combi\u00adna\u00adtion of the indivi\u00addual time dimen\u00adsions, the coeffi\u00adci\u00adents of which are derived from an optimiza\u00adtion algorithm. Typically, we use a meta-heuristic such as Simulated Annealing for this task, which converges to a good (local) optimum in finite time.<\/p>\n<p>The next step is to deter\u00admine which situa\u00adtions can have an influence on the failure of the system\/component. To this end, it is advisable to consult experts from develo\u00adp\u00adment and produc\u00adtion and, if neces\u00adsary, users. If there are too many influences, these can be reduced using statis\u00adtical methods for feature selec\u00adtion. Alter\u00adna\u00adtively, the infor\u00adma\u00adtion content of the influences can be condensed using a principal compo\u00adnent or factor analysis. In the case of V-belts, these are typically the average speed of the belt, the quality of the material, the ambient tempe\u00adra\u00adtures (perhaps a V-belt lasts longer in Norway than in Saudi Arabia? or shorter?) and others.<\/p>\n<p>A set of rules must now be derived from the influen\u00adcing varia\u00adbles in order to be able to predict specific failure behavior. Statis\u00adtical decision trees or the Random Forest machine learning method are usually used for this purpose. Both methods arrange the influences in descen\u00adding order depen\u00adding on their infor\u00adma\u00adtion content and separate the charac\u00adte\u00adristics in each tree level as shown schema\u00adti\u00adcally in the follo\u00adwing figure. The tree shown was not fully formed (this is known as prunning) because, for example, only a small amount of data was available from manufac\u00adturer 5. The diffe\u00adrence between the actual distances between two changes and the calcu\u00adlated times in the corre\u00adspon\u00adding node of the tree deter\u00admine the quality of the tree.<\/p>\n<p>A typical service life can now be read from the tree for a specific appli\u00adca\u00adtion situa\u00adtion of the part or compo\u00adnent. As described above, it is advisable to apply a safety factor to the times, which should take into account the costs of failure and the costs of repla\u00adce\u00adment. The forecast model should also be presented with current outage and repla\u00adce\u00adment infor\u00adma\u00adtion in order to be able to take changed environ\u00admental condi\u00adtions into account in the forecast.<\/p>\n<p>To increase the forecast quality, either further statis\u00adtical charac\u00adte\u00adristics can be taken into account or data from the specific V-belt (the specific serial) can be recorded with the aid of sensors. For example, an acoustic sensor could be used to measure the smooth running of the V-belt. If sensors are used to measure the current condi\u00adtion of the compo\u00adnent, this is referred to as \u201cpredic\u00adtive mainten\u00adance\u201d.
